Bob Gardner moved to Granville from Columbus in 1999 and then began teaching tennis in Granville. Bob now resides in Granville with his wife, Sherry, and their five children.
As a central Ohio native, Bob won the AAA States Singles Championship out of Upper Arlington High School. He was a full scholarship player for Miami University; team captain and NCAA singles participant with a sanctioned win over John McEnroe! As a pro, Bob was ranked #1 in the Men’s Ohio Valley Open Singles Division, and #3 in the Men’s Western Open Singles Division.
In his Junior program, Bob has had the good fortune to have coached the only 2 players from Granville ever to have qualified in singles to play in the Ohio High School State Championships: John Gardner and Patrick Boyd.
In addition to his players' success in the State singles participation, 23 times Bob's program has sent players who have qualified through the Sectional Championships and gone on to qualify for the High School District tournament in both singles and doubles competition.
Bob runs a year round program for children ages 5-18 as the Director of Tennis Operations and Head Pro at the Advantage Club. He is also very active in the Granville Recreation Department's Summer tennis program, having revived that program in 2005, after a 20 year absence. This program now involves over 75 children per year.
Two years ago, Bob began a match play program to help his players improve in match sitautions. Bob has match play for 4th through 6th graders, Middle school players and High School players. This program has been enthusiactically received by his players and has greatly improved their overall tennis abilities.
In 2004, Bob started a Middle School tennis team program on a volunteer basis. The 2 goals of the 10 week season are: to provide exposure to tennis in general, and to provide competition for 6th , 7th and 8th grade students before they reach the High School level. Today, that program involves both a Boys team in the Spring and a Girls team in the Fall that play 12-14 matches with Columbus schools on a home and away basis. Please contact Bob with any questions or to sign up. The Spring Boys season begins in March, and the Fall Girls season begins in August.
Bob is very proud of the fact that for the last 10 years his students have held the #1 Singles position on the Granville Boys' Varsity tennis team. Additionally, for 6 of the last 7 years, Bob’s tennis program has produced the #1 and #2 singles player for the Boys’ Granville High School tennis teams, the #1 and #2 players for the Girls' Varsity tennis team, and more singles and doubles positions on the Granville Varsity and Junior Varsity teams than any other tennis program.
Bob's emphasis on proper tennis stroke technique, attention to your individual strengths, and his knowledge of proven strategies allows you to get the best results and most fun from your tennis game.
Since 2000, Bob has been very fortunate and thankful to have taught over 750 children and families in the Granville, Newark, Chillocothe, Pataskala, Cambridge and Heath areas. With over 125 active students each year for the past 10 years, Bob’s successful tennis programs include; private lessons, junior clinics and programs for all ages, match play, traveling teams, Ladies Leagues and Ladies clinics.
